Happyfic recommendations

Gearbox
16May02 --updates are in bold

I like soul-rending angst as much as the next chick, but sometimes I'd rather read about people being kind, or good, or hilarious. I asked around for stories that are happier than usual, or funnier than usual, and also well written. Thanks to everyone who recommended stories! I appreciate it, and you, more than I can say.

I'll be delighted if you suggest happyfic for the next update. Any fandom. Het, gen, slash, I'm not picky about categories. Fandoms represented include due South, Lord of the Rings, The Sentinel, Smallville, Highlander, X-Files, Stargate, Harry Potter, Buffy. And I can think of a few more that I want to add Real Soon Now.

Many (but not all) of these stories portray sexual relationships between men, some in graphic detail. If you cannot legally read such stories , do not click on the links. Non-slash stories are marked as such.

Caveat: I have not read every one of these stories. In the cases where I haven't read them, I trust the people who recommended them.

Authors: if you don't want to be linked -- or want to be linked in a different way -- I'm happy to comply. Just let me know.

Due South

(in rough alpha order)
Frostbite by Carolyn Alert

Us by Aral

It's All in the Wrist by Aristide

Subatomic by AuKestrel.
In addition to being adorable, includes Buckaroo Banzai references. Always a good thing! Also check out Likewise and Eye of a Hurricane.

Stranger than Fiction by Beth H.
a teensy bit of angsting, but marvelously weird and wonderful.

Two Men in a Boat, or Adventures on the African Queen by Sihaya Black
Well, there's some drama, but come on, we KNOW what happens.

How Ray Got His Groove Back by Bone

Penny Serenade by Colleen

True North by Crysothemis
Warning! This cannot even remotely be considered angst-free. It is quite long. But the payoff is wonderful.

Unamerican by Jacquez

Many stories by Journey including Family Portrait and Yank. I have a soft spot for Yank.

O'Leary's Hotel by Judi
Bizarre and wonderful.

Gift Horse by Julad

The Sea Wolf by Kadru
Okay, the story is almost entirely set 100 years from now. Our guys are long dead. But it's still very sweet.

Buzz by LaT

Did Too, by Lynn Zo

Fairy Tale by Kit Mason
Post COTW. In which Ray and Fraser make all right for the dS world. A schmoopy pre-sex PWP.

Many stories by Kellie Matthews
especially Garnish. Kellie never over-angsts. You're in good hands, here.

Dief Explains Everything To A Wolf Cub by Otsoko.
Cute premise, well executed. The sequels are pretty good, too.

Pares' leather jacket/cable knit is one of the Canadian Shacks. A PWP. Oh yeah.

Adorned by Resonant

Rowan's Does a Body Good and The Delivery.

Dirty by Shrift
And while you're at it, read the rest of Shrift's stories. Refraction, Footnotes. . . it's all good.

Most of Speranzas stories are hilarious, although some of them can leave you laughing and crying at the same time. In particular, look for Interrogation, The Killer Replacements, and my favorite Chicago's Most Wanted.

Many stories by Viridian
Especially: Favorite Things, The Thrill of the Chase, and Closet Siberia. Wings. Underlined
Some folks swear by her Tea and Insanity series -- it's not really my thing, but I can see the attraction.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Wolves by Penelope Whistle

LotR

There's something about Hobbits that lend themselves to sweetness and light.
(in rough alpha order)

What a Strange idea by Acer Canadensis

Bagenders by Lady Alyssa and Random Flatmate
Now for something completely different. Not amazingly well written, but that's okay.

"The Making of Samwise" Series by Bill the Pony
Sweet.

They Say of the Elves by Brancher
Beautiful, beautiful. Leaves me speechless.

The Very Secret Diaries by Cassandra Claire
Howlingly funny. It made "pervy Hobbit fancier" a common phrase in my house.

The History of Us by Daisy Gamgee
A very sweet LotR fic series. Not entirely angst-free, but it all comes out right in the end.

Hal's LotR stories

Burrow by Jane St Clair
So sweet.

Pam's I'm Too Sexy vid. Hilarious!

Everything else

(first crossovers and multifandom authors, then arranged roughly by fandom)

Anything and everything by Mallory Klohn, aka Ethan Nelson
Because I've never found anybody else who can write sex scenes quite this funny.

Telegrams From Hell:Fiction in Five Words by four authors, inflicted on many fandoms.

China by Torch
An XF/HL xover.

Wombat has a delightful sense of humor. "The Rapture" is mostly XF/HL, but spins through a huge number of fandoms. Worth the price of admission just to hear Joe Dawson say "Oh my god, they killed Kenny! Those bastards!"

Te's Buffyfic especially "Bananarama", "Random Hot Tub Fic", and "Brass"

apogee by Llamajoy
Harry Potter

Out of the Woods by Canis M
Harry Potter. Very sweet. (No sex, by the way)

Leaning with the Turns by Aristide
Part of "Futures Without End 3". Wonderfully happy and beautifully illustrated. Highlander.

The Schmarlequin Contests aka the "Harlequin, Schmarlequin, read me some slash" contest. Highlander. Many of these fics fly so far Over The Top that you'll need an oxygen mask.

bbc's BBC's Sadie stories.
Highlander. Farce.

The Anniversary Story and Tahiti (which does include some yelling) by Francesca.
The Sentinel

Everything you need in one convenient location by Julad
hysterical The Sentinel

It Happened and Salsa by Penelope Whistle
The Sentinel

Pares' TS stories

Black Pond by Viridian
Smallville

Gynecology by Charlemagne
Sportsnight

Diversion by Biblio
Stargate. Long. This links to the first part. Ridiculous.

The Entirely Beautiful by torch
Star Wars -- The Phantom Menace.

Rug Burn and Last Train to Clarksville by JiM
XFiles, Mulder/Skinner. JiM tends to be good in general.

Nonslash

Pam's I'm Too Sexy vid. Hilarious!

LORD OF THE RINGS: BREADBOX EDITION: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS by Evadne. This is at fanfiction.net, so the link may die without warning. But you can search for it fairly easily.

Gil Shalos' BIIIIG List Of LOTR Fanfic Cliches And Mary Sue-Doms
This idea has been done many times in other fandoms, but it was still ridiculuously funny. And there's plenty of other kicks at Mary Sues at this site.
